If I don’t consciously and holistically consider all the demands my life — not just my work — make on my time, and make sure to juxtapose those life demands with the work I need to get done on a given day, something will simply slip through the cracks. Mapping it out at least forces me to make a conscious choice ahead of time, so that if something needs to slip, it can be something that’s less important to me than, say, getting to read my daughter her bedtime story.

Every morning, my daughter’s first words to me are “I love you Daddy”. I often say that my only goal each and every day is to make it to the next “I love you Daddy”

I decided to do a thorough evaluation of all my lists. Not only were my to-do lists filled with things that I’m certain I won’t do, I was surprised by how many things I will do and want to do that have never made it onto my lists.

Erin was inspired by a chapter in my book to “get real” with her to-do lists. What she ends up writing here is actually some of the best and clearest advice I have read on building an effective list. If you care about the quality of capturing what you really need to get done, this is a must read… As is the book 😉

Do yourself a favor and buy some great blank business card paper stock and keep a pen handy. When you meet someone, make them feel a little special by taking the time to write out exactly what they need to know. It’s unique. It stands out. It’s powerful.

Great idea. Now, to find just the right cards.

I’m not sure anyone but David could write such a beautiful and hopeful essay about a place so seemingly bereft of both.
