A Wright house isn’t a build­ing, it’s a philo­soph­i­cal text about fam­ily, nature and land­scape. An inglenook is impor­tant — it draws fam­ily and friends into con­ver­sa­tions. Views into the sur­round­ing land­scape are impor­tant — they con­nect us to nature. An Apple prod­uct isn’t about but­tons and screens, it’s about elim­i­nat­ing bar­ri­ers between the user and what the user chooses to care about when using the device.

An interesting comparison between Frank Lloyd Wright and Steve Jobs. As someone who is a fan of both, I found the compare and contrast of their design philosophy compelling.

Just in case you were wondering where I am.

If I don’t consciously and holistically consider all the demands my life — not just my work — make on my time, and make sure to juxtapose those life demands with the work I need to get done on a given day, something will simply slip through the cracks. Mapping it out at least forces me to make a conscious choice ahead of time, so that if something needs to slip, it can be something that’s less important to me than, say, getting to read my daughter her bedtime story.

Every morning, my daughter’s first words to me are “I love you Daddy”. I often say that my only goal each and every day is to make it to the next “I love you Daddy”

I decided to do a thorough evaluation of all my lists. Not only were my to-do lists filled with things that I’m certain I won’t do, I was surprised by how many things I will do and want to do that have never made it onto my lists.

Erin was inspired by a chapter in my book to “get real” with her to-do lists. What she ends up writing here is actually some of the best and clearest advice I have read on building an effective list. If you care about the quality of capturing what you really need to get done, this is a must read… As is the book 😉

Sometimes, you don’t even know you are writing a book until you have done so. A writer who writes primarily for online publishing, who is used to publishing in essay form, does not always see the individual items emerging into a meaningful whole. Then, one day, you look up and realize that…

Do yourself a favor and buy some great blank business card paper stock and keep a pen handy. When you meet someone, make them feel a little special by taking the time to write out exactly what they need to know. It’s unique. It stands out. It’s powerful.

Great idea. Now, to find just the right cards.

I’m not sure anyone but David could write such a beautiful and hopeful essay about a place so seemingly bereft of both.

The Internet and all of our portable devices provide more opportunities for reading than ever, but the Internet also provides more than we could ever hope to read. What we need is something to help reach a balance: a reading service (or app) with intelligence, and with an emphasis on fitting reading into our lives as they are.

I love every idea submitted here. We have the technology, someone just needs to build it.

A pencil’s role is to support without being noticed. Too ostentatious, and it’s gotten in the way of the very concepts one intends to sketch or write. Too weak, and it bends to will, forcing the user to turn to a pen for a stronger character and more determined line.
